Position Overview

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist II-Immune Effector Cell (IEC) plays a vital role in delivering pharmaceutical care to patients within an Immune Effector Cell clinic. This position collaborates closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and fellow pharmacists to ensure comprehensive outpatient care.

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist II-IEC is tasked with counseling patients initiating new intravenous and/or oral antineoplastics, conducting clinical evaluations, monitoring adherence and toxicity for patients undergoing active treatment, addressing drug-related inquiries, reviewing chemotherapy orders from designated providers prior to infusion, and facilitating drug access.

This role is primarily based onsite, with the possibility of remote work limited to one day per week, applicable only to candidates residing in specific New England states.

Key Responsibilities

  • Practice as a pharmacist in alignment with all federal, state, DFCI, and Joint Commission regulations and standards.
  • Ensure medication orders and prescriptions are appropriate, accurate, and complete based on patient-specific criteria and clinical data.
  • Provide clinical consultation and evidence-based recommendations for treatment plans, supportive care, dose adjustments, and monitoring strategies based on clinical guidelines and institutional standards.
  • Actively participate as a member of the pharmacy and interdisciplinary team in patient care meetings, including rounds and case discussions.
  • Deliver comprehensive education to patients and caregivers involved in oncology-related therapies, including participation in educational programs and the maintenance of patient education resources.
  • Document clinical activities in the electronic health record (EHR) and communicate any changes in care plans to relevant staff.
  • Engage in scholarly and educational initiatives as per departmental expectations, including in-services, drug evaluations, resident mentoring, clinical research, and quality improvement projects.
  • Participate in clinical administrative responsibilities such as pathway management, formulary requests, and other departmental initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, procedures, educational materials, and workflow designs to enhance program effectiveness.

Qualifications

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist II-IEC must fulfill the following criteria to be considered for the position:

  • Minimum Education: A Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum Experience: Completion of a PGY2 residency in a relevant specialty (preferred) or a PGY1 residency combined with two years of clinical specialist experience (e.g., oncology, palliative care, anticoagulation) or five years of clinical specialist experience in similar fields.
  • License/Certification: Must hold a valid pharmacy license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Board certification in the specialty area is required within 18 months of employment.

  • Competence in resolving common issues within the scope of practice and escalating concerns as necessary.
