Overview

The Director of Special Services will provide leadership and administrative oversight for Special Education Programs and services in the District. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and district special education mandates.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Program Administration: Develop and review curriculum as it relates to students with disabilities, develop comprehensive programs and services for special education students, and develop and maintain special education graduation requirements.
  2. Transition Requirements: Implement transition requirements for special education students and develop and implement appropriate pre-referral and referral systems.
  3. Staff Support: Assist special education teachers in selecting and disseminating materials designed for use with students with disabilities and develop and implement needs assessments and high-quality professional development for special education staff.
  4. Compliance and Monitoring: Assist with administration and adherence to special education law requirements, development of improvement plans, and monitoring of professional development activities.
  5. Reporting and Communication: Inform the Superintendent and other district administrators on relevant special education data, including student attendance, special education state performance indicator data, and special education graduation data.
  6. Designee and Code of Conduct: Act as the Designee of the Superintendent in matters relating to special education and administer the student code of conduct and discipline of students with disabilities.
  7. Budget and Oversight: Provide administrative oversight of special education budget and costs and oversee individual educational plans (IEPs) for students assigned to local district programs and services.
Requirements
  • Michigan Teacher Certificate with at least one area of endorsement in Special Education.
  • A Master's Degree, preferably in Special Education.
  • Administrator Certificate.
  • Three years of successful professional practice in Special Education, administrative experience in Special Education, or combination thereof.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others as a team member in a collaborative environment.
