Job Summary

Ethos Veterinary Health is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Veterinary Surgical Assistant to join our team. As a key member of our surgical team, you will provide primary support to our specialists, ensuring the best quality of care for our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-Surgical Preparation
    • Practice Fear Free standards and protocols to ensure a calm and stress-free environment for our patients.
    • Understand the organization and operations of the department, including the daily OR schedule and patient flow.
  • Surgical Support
    • Assist the anesthetist with pre-operative testing, including blood draws and radiographs.
    • Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-medicating, setting IVC, and preparing for induction.
    • Monitor patients under anesthesia, ensuring their safety and well-being.
    • Document patient vitals, record problems and interventions, and complete the second checklist.
  • Post-Surgical Care
    • Recover patients smoothly, intervening if necessary to address delirium, dysphoria, or pain.
    • Assess pain, assign pain scores, and treat pain as needed.
    • Ensure the surgery scheduling protocols are followed, and communicate effectively with clients and patients.
  • Departmental Support
    • Restock and maintain the cleanliness of the specialty department area, exam rooms, and other hospital areas.
    • Train less experienced staff members on proper policies, procedures, technical skills, and medical information.
    • Cross-train to assist in other areas of the hospital as needed.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician or Assistant.
  • Ability to perform all key responsibilities of a Technician Assistant.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and acceptable sanitation/sterilization practices.
  • Comprehension of commonly used medical terminology and equipment.
  • Ability to calculate accurate dosages and injections.
  • Familiarity with CPR and rescue breathing.
  • Excellent communication and people skills.
  • Good grooming and hygiene.
  • Team-oriented attitude and ability to promote a positive culture.
  • Considerable tact and diplomacy in dealing with clients affected by various problems.
  • Ability to work with and without direct supervision.
  • Capability to kneel, bend, and lift various sizes of animals onto treatment tables without assistance.
