Job Summary

The ALS Paramedic will demonstrate advanced critical thinking capabilities while working autonomously and in collaboration with other healthcare providers in the delivery of care to ill patients requiring advanced life support in diverse and non-traditional settings.

Scope:

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the following age groups: neonatal (0-29 days) not requiring isolette, pediatric, and adult.

All medical crew members may be subject to certain work conditions while functioning in the full capacity of their position.

Work Conditions:
  • Performance of essential job responsibilities in a moving ground ambulance as well as the potential to do so in an outdoor environment (inclement weather, extremes of temperature, etc.)
  • Exposure to noise, vibration of ground ambulance
  • Exposure to patients with known or unknown infectious disease in an enclosed space
  • Operate the transport equipment (within scope of practice) effectively
  • Check functioning and safety of all equipment
  • Uses supplies efficiently and replaces supplies when needed and/or after each call
  • Cleans front and back of ambulance as needed and/or after each call and/or before ending shift
  • Completes patient care reports correctly and in a timely manner as educated and directed according to AMT standard practice
  • Is respectful towards all they encounter and leads with honesty and integrity
Job Essentials:
  • Assess: Performs appropriate assessment of physical, social and psychological status (including cognitive, communicative and developmental skills as appropriate)
  • Seeks and evaluates information acquired from patient record and other members of interdisciplinary team: referring healthcare provider, patient, family, physician(s), nursing and non-nursing disciplines, support staff, and others
  • Plan: Uses assessment information and independent critical thinking skills to autonomously and collaboratively develop individualized plan of care. Actively seeks patient, family, team, and physician involvement to develop plan of care including needed education
  • Coordinates and effectively communicates decision-making process and plan for patient care with team members and other health care providers, where possible and appropriate
  • Prepares patients for further support at receiving facilities
  • Implement: Directs medical care via delegation, coordination, and collaboration as appropriate. Provides or delegates care consistent with plan of care, guidelines of care and professional licensure provisions
  • Demonstrates the ability to set priorities and to coordinate and organize patient care delivery through effectively managing time, supplies, and resources
  • Selects and administers the appropriate medications and calculates correct dosage based on physical findings
  • Evaluate: Evaluates patient response to interventions through review of achievement of goals, clinical outcomes, patient and family satisfaction. Revises plan of care as indicated, and reassesses changes as appropriate
  • Professionalism: Promotes clinical profession and education and actively participates in development of self and others. Integrates legal and ethical standards into practice; complies with regulatory standards (State EMS statutes)
  • Practices within scope of licensure and service line policies, procedures, and patient care guidelines
  • Provides accurate & timely documentation; and understands legal implications of care delivery
  • Evaluates transports according to departmental Quality Management criteria and guidelines
  • Clinical Decision Making: Provides care based on review and analysis of patient information received from referring health care providers, the patient record, and initial and ongoing assessment of physical findings
  • Demonstrates effective, independent critical thinking. Autonomous and collaborative in the provision of patient care
  • Selects and administers the appropriate medications and calculates correct dosage based on physical findings, knowledge base, and patient care guidelines
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current Idaho Paramedic license or plan to complete prior to start date
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for healthcare providers
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current valid/unrestricted driver's license in state of residence
  • At least 1 year of experience as a 911 responder
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and able to follow written and verbal directions
  • Able to transfer and position patients independently and safely
  • Understands position may require exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation, and other conditions
  • Able to work irregular hours under high stress conditions
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and others that require Paramedic to verbally communicate, as well as hear, and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2-5 years' experience as a 911 responder
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Certification(s) as appropriate to area(s) of practice: (PHTLS) or higher
Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period.

Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment.
