Job Title: Head Start Assistant Teacher/Driver

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Head Start Assistant Teacher/Driver. As a key member of our early childhood education team, you will play a vital role in providing a developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant preschool experience for children aged 3 and 4 years old.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and executing activities to implement a developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant preschool program.
  • Provide safe and efficient transportation services to 20 children.
  • Follow through on daily educational plans within the classroom and plan activities.
  • Set up and maintain a developmentally appropriate classroom environment, including organization of space and material storage.
  • Set up educational and/or social service-related home visits with assigned families.
  • Plan daily lesson plans.
  • Deliver food service and eat with the children.
  • Daily cleaning and classroom preparation duties.
  • Complete required documentation and follow-up activities.
  • Work in a team setting with other staff to assess the needs of families and children.
  • Participate in Child Development Associates (CDA) program and/or other training activities.
  • Support the Head Start goals, objectives, and performance standards.
  • Develop and drive a bus route.
  • Implement a daily bus route and transport for program-related activities.
  • Ensure the bus is in operation in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ensure all necessary upkeep, maintenance, and safety checks for the bus are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for the behavior of children on the bus, with particular attention to safety.
  • Keep assigned vehicle clean.
  • Report any accidents or malfunctions to the Head Start Manager.
  • Record gas slips.
  • Record and report on in-kind services.

Requirements:

  • Associates or bachelor's degree (any field) - OR - High School Diploma or GED and six months experience in a structured early childhood education setting (Pre-School, Head Start, Kindergarten, Day-Care Center).
  • Must obtain Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within 2 years of hire date.
  • Must obtain valid Oregon School Bus Drivers Certificate and Oregon Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with the proper endorsements - OR - CDL Permit and be able to obtain a valid Oregon Commercial Drivers License (within 90-days of employment) with the proper endorsements and fulfill all of the requirements for the Oregon School Bus Drivers Permit and Certificate under OAR.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check which includes a sex offender registry check and obtain one of the following through the Central Background Registry: State or tribal criminal history records, including fingerprints; or, Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history records, including fingerprints; and Child abuse and neglect state registry check, if available, and all of these checks must also be performed for every state where the individual has resided within five years.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Positive methods of child guidance that includes redirection, consistency, and prevention.
  • Developmentally appropriate practices for early childhood.
  • Basic understanding of child development.
  • Work effectively with low-income families.
  • Use a positive approach in directing child behavior.

  • Be comfortable working with children and families from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Work cooperatively with other program staff.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member and accept direction.
  • Be reliable and punctual.
  • Work some evenings and weekends.
  • Meet the physical demands of the classroom environment and to facilitate and support the physical activity of 20 young children inside, outside of the classroom, and as necessary, to intervene physically to protect the health and safety of the children.
  • Establish and maintain professional boundaries.

Other Requirements:

  • Obtain Food Handler's card within 15-days of hire.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR within first 30-days of hire.
  • Screened for tuberculosis.
  • Tolerant and sensitive when working with children and families.

Salary: $20.45/hr
