Job Title: Environmental Educator

Join the Hudson River Park team as an Environmental Educator and contribute to the mission of protecting the 400-acre Estuarine Sanctuary and promoting awareness and stewardship of the Hudson River through science and education.

Job Summary

The Environmental Educator will lead hands-on STEM programming for NYC students and the general public at various Park sites year-round. This role involves planning programs, updating curriculum, building partnerships, and collaborating with the River Project team of scientists and educators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and teach environmental education programs for schools and summer camps, focusing on Hudson River wildlife, shoreline ecology, climate change, environmental justice, and waterfront history.
  • Schedule, track, and permit field trip programs for schools and summer camps.
  • Help plan and implement public education programs at indoor and outdoor locations, including Big City Fishing catch & release fishing workshops, guest lectures, guided tours, partner events, and open hours at the Wetlab aquarium and Pier 57 Discovery Tank.
  • Assist with the hiring, training, mentorship, and supervision of seasonal staff and interns.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with local schools and community groups.
  • Design curriculum and teaching materials for programming and maintain department resources, such as fishing poles and microscopes.
  • Support the ongoing maintenance of fish tanks and learn to handle live fish and other marine wildlife.
  • Support the Park's estuarine research and science projects on topics such as oysters, fish ecology, marine debris, and Park sustainability.
  • Support the Park's volunteer programs focused on oyster monitoring and shoreline cleanups.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in environmental science, education, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience in environmental education or classroom teaching.
  • General knowledge of environmental science themes, local marine life, classroom management techniques, and science communication strategies.
  • Strong interest in teaching diverse audiences of all ages and abilities in indoor and outdoor locations.

Physical and Other Requirements
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed for scheduled programs.
  • Willingness to get muddy, handle live animals, work outside in all weather conditions, and practice catch and release fishing.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license and/or ability to ride a bicycle is required.
Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary of $50,000-$55,000 annually depending upon qualifications. Excellent benefits package including paid holidays, vacation time, sick and personal time, transportation allowance or parking pass, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and participation in New York State Pension System.
