Nuclear Safety Engineer Job Description

At Amentum, we are seeking a highly skilled Nuclear Safety Engineer to join our team at the Hanford Vit Plant. As a Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe operation of our nuclear facilities and the protection of our employees and the surrounding community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply expertise to broadly stated technical problems related to nuclear safety and radiation protection.
  • Identify and define problems; plan and conduct research aimed at their solution.
  • Conduct or lead special studies on new technologies, methods, and materials related to nuclear safety.
  • Carry out special or unique studies requiring unconventional or novel approaches or research techniques.
  • Use all available guides and precedents and expand and develop where these contain critical gaps, are only partially related to the problem, or are largely lacking because of the novel character of the project.
  • Lead, as requested, in the formulation of advanced engineering/scientific concepts during proposal development and preliminary design phases and present these to client management.
  • Conduct research, present papers, and keep abreast of technological developments in a specialty, keeping engineering management informed of important new advances.
  • Serve as consultant to project and specialty engineering/scientific groups, providing advice and counsel on assignments having special and unique features.
  • Support the preparation of and reviews discipline estimates, discipline work plans, budgets, and schedules.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of special educational and training programs for Bechtel personnel and/or clients.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent education) in an appropriate engineering discipline or related science from a four-year accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience.
  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience with DOE nuclear projects safety basis development, or commercial nuclear power plant licensing or analysis.
  • Knowledge in nuclear safety/engineering.
  • Technical knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, application of engineering methods and materials, and application of computers.
  • Knowledge of current industry or regulatory codes and standards and study criteria pertinent to the nuclear engineering discipline.
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in processing facilities, DOE facilities, or DOD facilities.
  • Experience with national consensus codes and standards.
  • Understanding of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design guides, and relevant Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
Physical Requirements:

Exposed Field Non-Manual. Performs desk work, including writing, computer workstation processes, and telephone operation. Arranges for and/or performs presentations, oral reports, planning meetings, and other formal and informal contacts, requiring long periods of sitting. Oversees field activities through inspections, testing, and equipment operations, which requires walking, standing, bending, and turning along with wearing of personal protective equipment. Occasional loading, transport, and unloading of tools and/or supplies specific to an activity.

Compensation & Benefits:

Hiring Salary Range: $87,011.43 - $133,126.59 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Must be able to work in the United States without Sponsorship. Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy (DOE) badge for access to the Hanford site.
