Job Summary

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a highly skilled Nuclear Safety Basis Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Radiation Protection Division, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of our nuclear facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and update the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) in accordance with DOE-STD-3009 and Technical Safety Requirements (TSR).
  • Perform hazard and accident analyses to identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) evaluations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support the implementation of the DSA and TSR through reviews, mentoring, and training.
  • Assist with or lead routine monitoring of the Nuclear Safety Program, including reviewing surveillances and internal and external NS program assessments.
  • Maintain awareness of existing and planned changes to operations and regulatory requirements to ensure safe and compliant work practices.
  • Address facility and process safety needs, particularly in nuclear-related construction, operation, and decommissioning.
  • May assist with training staff members to communicate elements of nuclear safety culture to both technical and non-technical personnel.
Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-
    • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience -OR-
    • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in authoring Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), Technical Safety Requirements (TSR), and Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ).
    • Experience performing hazard analysis and control allocation in accordance with DOE-STD-3009.
    • Experience performing accident analysis and dose consequence calculations for radiological release events.
    • Previous experience in a DOE HC-2/nuclear facility.
    • Previous technical experience in nuclear safety.
    • High-level writing and verbal communication skills are required.
    • The ability to obtain Radiological Worker qualifications.
Working Conditions

This position requires working at Building 325 – Radiochemical Processing Laboratory, a Hazard Category 2, DOE-owned non-reactor nuclear facility. Potential exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation and standard industrial hazards.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required, and applicants must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
