Position Overview

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking dedicated individuals for the role of Maintenance Worker. This position requires U.S. Citizenship and is open to CTAP/ICTAP eligible candidates.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring safe work practices and eliminating potential hazards. Duties include custodial tasks, grounds upkeep, and routine maintenance to ensure the cleanliness and functionality of facilities. As a uniformed staff member, the individual will also provide assistance to visitors and administer first aid when necessary.

The successful candidate will engage in various cleaning tasks, including scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors with industrial-grade equipment. Responsibilities also encompass washing walls, cleaning blinds, and maintaining ceiling fixtures using ladders and scaffolding. Heavy lifting and moving of furniture, supplies, and equipment will be required, along with the replacement of restroom supplies.

Additional duties include preparing and maintaining various floor and wall surfaces, removing stains with appropriate cleaning agents, and performing minor repairs. The role may involve working at heights to change light bulbs and clean surfaces. The incumbent will operate and maintain powered cleaning equipment, ensuring it is clean and functional.

The successful applicant will also be responsible for the safe operation of grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers and trimmers, and will conduct routine maintenance checks on this equipment.

The role includes minor painting tasks, such as touch-ups and repainting as necessary. The applicant will be expected to safely remove snow and ice from walkways and parking areas, operating snow removal equipment as needed.

Routine building maintenance tasks will include changing light bulbs, addressing minor plumbing issues, repairing walls, and installing fixtures. The candidate should be capable of performing grounds maintenance and sanitation tasks independently. Responsibilities also include trash collection and cleaning of public areas, exhibits, and machinery as directed.

The position requires operating light-duty vehicles to transport personnel and materials to various work sites within the park.

Employment Conditions

  • A valid driver's license is required for operating government vehicles.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is mandatory.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required.
  • Travel may be necessary, and a travel charge card may be required.
  • This position is a Career Seasonal Position and is subject to furlough.
  • New employees may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or meet specific educational criteria.

Qualifications

Candidates should provide detailed descriptions of their experience and training relevant to the responsibilities of this position. Volunteer experience will also be considered valuable.
