Position Overview

About the Role: This role is integral to the Defense Health Agency, focusing on providing high-quality optometric care.

This announcement is open for ongoing applications, allowing for multiple positions to be filled as they become available.

This is a Direct Hire opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough visual and ocular assessments for diverse patient populations.
  • Address a comprehensive range of visual impairments and ocular conditions.
  • Offer consultative support to medical personnel and other stakeholders as required.
  • Identify and diagnose visual anomalies and specific pathological conditions affecting the ocular adnexa and the eye.
  • Assist in the medical evaluation of trainees and service members.

  • Appointment may require a suitability or fitness assessment based on a completed background check.
  • This position is designated for testing and is subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Candidates will need to consent to random drug urinalysis.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is mandatory.
  • Selected candidates must agree to receive seasonal influenza vaccinations or provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is essential. Hepatitis B vaccination is required for all roles involving direct patient interaction. Additional immunizations may be necessary based on position requirements.
  • Must obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through recognized organizations. Advanced certifications do not replace BLS.
  • Candidates must meet credentialing standards and secure relevant clinical privileges.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This role may necessitate working irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications

Who Can Apply: U.S. Citizens

To qualify, candidates must meet the educational and/or experiential criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through national service programs and other organizations. Relevant experience must be clearly detailed in the resume; if qualifying through education, transcripts will be required.

Basic Qualifications for Clinical Optometrist: A Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited educational program recognized by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) at the time of degree conferral.

AND

Licensure: Candidates must have successfully passed the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NEBO) examinations and hold a current, unrestricted license to practice optometry in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.

In addition to the basic qualifications, candidates must also meet the following specialized experience requirements:

Specialized Experience: One year of professional experience as an optometrist, which includes patient examinations, diagnosing visual disorders or diseases, and determining treatment plans. This experience is typically associated with work at the next lower grade/level in federal service.

OR

Residency: Completion of a one-year residency program in an accredited institution. Substitution of education for experience is not permitted for this position.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If utilizing foreign education to meet qualification requirements, candidates must provide evidence that their educational credentials have been evaluated by a recognized organization specializing in foreign education interpretation and deemed equivalent to U.S. accredited programs.
