GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Shift: 40-hour rotation
The Procedure Room Assistant operates under the direct oversight of the PCA Supervisor. This role is essential for the transportation of patients, ensuring cleanliness in procedure rooms, maintaining a hygienic environment, moving necessary equipment, delivering specimens, and executing additional tasks as required. The Procedure Room Assistant is an integral member of the Periprocedural Nursing Team, possessing specialized knowledge, skills, and training to function effectively in a procedural environment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Fosters a patient and family-centered care philosophy through friendly greetings and interactions with patients, families, and hospital staff.
- Provides orientation information regarding hospital units for guests, patients, and families.
- Demonstrates knowledge of hospital systems and procedures, including the locations of all departments, procedure areas, and other patient services, and refers patients and families to appropriate resources.
- Independently transports and assists in the transfer of patients across all age groups, from adolescents to geriatrics.
- Accurately identifies patients using two approved identifiers.
- Ensures safety and support measures during patient transfers (e.g., raising bedrails, covering patients with blankets).
- Aware of special precautions when transferring patients with specific needs.
- Utilizes proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfers and lifting heavy objects.
- Maintains cleanliness in procedure rooms, bays, setup areas, autoclave areas, and scrub sink areas.
- Disposes of suction containers, equipment, laundry bags, and trash bags appropriately.
- Cleans furniture and prepares beds, equipment, etc.
- Ensures floors are kept clean.
- Manages the exchange of full biohazardous waste, including needles, medication waste, chemotherapy, and sealed sources of radiation.
- Anticipates and remains attentive to the progress of procedural schedules, ensuring supplies are ready for immediate use to meet tight deadlines.
- Keeps corridors clean and free of trash and debris.
- Assists in the retrieval, movement, setup, and return of specialized equipment and instrumentation (e.g., fracture table preparation, ICU beds, anesthesia carts).
- Delivers specimens to laboratories (e.g., microbiology, cytology, pathology).
- Collects and logs specimens from refrigerators.
- Retrieves, delivers, and returns blood products, utilizing patient identifiers during the process.
- Ensures proper handoff of products to procedural staff.
- Creates stock lists and manages the stocking of procedure room scrub sinks, setup areas, and autoclave areas (e.g., face masks, soap, paperwork).
- Distributes linen as needed.
- Carries out duties specific to service areas (e.g., PACU, Amigo, Interventional Radiology).
- Reports any broken stretchers or bed equipment.
- Completes equipment repair sheets and removes broken stretchers from circulation.
- Performs standard duties within scope (e.g., holding limbs, assisting in positioning patients).
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served in the Perioperative area and Operating Rooms.
- Conducts pre-procedure preparations (e.g., site washing and hair clipping).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read, understand, and write in English.
- Successful completion of Hospital Orientation.
- Successful completion of Departmental Orientation and Training.
SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs independently.
- Must be able to push a stretcher independently with a patient weighing up to 250 lbs.
- Must be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies and ordering supplies.
- Must be aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting heavy objects.
- Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with other healthcare team members.
- Must remain alert and attentive to the progress of procedural schedules to meet tight deadlines.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a sterile and sub-sterile environment requiring the wearing of surgical scrub attire, including scrubs, hats, masks, gloves, booties, gowns, and goggles. There may be times when the temperature is required to be very warm for extended periods. The work environment is typically underground with no windows or exposure to natural light, and may involve some physical discomfort due to unpleasant odors and high noise levels. Handling of body fluids, sharps, and tissue occurs frequently, necessitating strict adherence to safety precautions to prevent exposure and/or injury. The environment is fast-paced, high-stress, demanding, and intense.
