Under the general oversight of the collaborating Orthopedic surgeon(s), the Orthopedic Surgical Physician Assistant is tasked with executing a variety of clinical responsibilities that support orthopedic practice while adhering to evidence-based guidelines in patient care and treatment. This role emphasizes a courteous, respectful, and compassionate approach to patient interactions.

Organizational Responsibilities:

· Actively engages in hospital meetings and collaborates with colleagues to meet departmental goals. Addresses concerns and issues in a professional manner, following the established chain of command;

· Maintains confidentiality regarding employee, legal, client/patient, budgetary, and all organizational matters;

· Enhances knowledge by participating in educational programs that improve competencies in orthopedics.

Record Utilization:

· Effectively uses the current Electronic Medical Record system to accurately complete documented Best Practice Workflows.

· Records physical findings and patient responses on appropriate documentation and medical records.

Direct Patient Care:

· Conducts physical assessments, gathers medical histories, and performs therapeutic procedures in a professional manner according to established orthopedic care standards. This primary function is expected to occur in various settings including outpatient offices, operating rooms, emergency departments, and inpatient units.

· Develops an appropriate care plan based on physical examinations, patient histories, and clinical findings, collaborating with physicians as necessary.

· Communicates follow-up information to patients regarding testing in accordance with practice and hospital policies.

· Identifies and reports urgent information requiring immediate attention, ensuring proper follow-through.

· Issues or submits orders for diagnostic tests, referrals, and medications.

· Addresses patient inquiries and clarifies concerns related to medications, diet, activity, and overall health status.

· Accommodates same-day appointments as required.

· Completes peer-to-peer communications for insurance companies as necessary for diagnostic tests, surgeries, and other orders placed by orthopedic providers.

· Performs procedures including, but not limited to, digital blocks, regional anesthesia, and minor outpatient surgical tasks such as tendon repairs, wound closures, and debridements.

· Conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including joint aspirations, closed reductions of fractures and dislocations, and injections into joints and tendons.

· Assists in surgical procedures, including first assisting, tissue closures, and application of medical devices as delegated by the surgeon.

· Conducts hospital rounds, submits orders, evaluates clinical conditions, and formulates treatment plans for hospitalized patients, dictating discharge summaries and histories.

· Takes primary call one night a week and second call one weekend a month, remaining onsite until 7 PM while on call during the week.

· Acts as the primary contact for orthopedic-related inquiries while on primary call.

· Facilitates coordination of multidisciplinary resources for both surgical and non-surgical orthopedic care.

Care Coordination:

· Communicates with referring specialists and providers, serving as a representative for the orthopedic department service lines.

· Collaborates effectively with all members of multidisciplinary teams, particularly in rehabilitative services.

· Makes medical diagnoses and provides appropriate treatment, including referrals to other healthcare facilities or specialists.

· Coordinates treatment plans with patients and their families.

· Promotes the orthopedic department and its services through community engagement.

Organizational Expectations:

· Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial; employees are expected to arrive on time and complete their scheduled shifts.

· Attends and engages in at least 50% of departmental staff meetings and reviews all meeting minutes.

· Completes all required annual education by the specified deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities or demonstrate the capability to perform the primary functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

· Minimal physical effort is required, with occasional light lifting up to 25 pounds; ability to stoop and perform tasks primarily with fingers.

· Capacity to manage significant mental stress effectively.

· Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively through spoken word.

· Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

· Proficient in conveying information clearly and accurately to coworkers.

· Familiarity with computers and other business equipment is essential.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.

Experience: A minimum of three years as a Physician Assistant is preferred, with orthopedic competency validation through case volume or additional education required.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of NH. Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
