Lead Nurse Coordinator
Job Overview:
The Lead Nurse Coordinator serves as a Registered Nurse with pivotal responsibilities in managing patient flow and optimizing unit staffing to adapt to the evolving needs of patients. This role requires the application of the nursing process to continuously assess patient acuity, evaluate the workload of nursing staff, and predict variations in admissions, discharges, and transfers. The effective management of patient flow involves triaging and prioritizing admissions while overseeing the coordination of care for patients being discharged or transferred.
Daily nurse staffing decisions must reflect effective judgment to safely align changes in patient acuity and census with the availability, expertise, and proficiency of nursing staff, ensuring safe and sufficient staffing across all shifts. The Lead Nurse Coordinator is expected to exhibit resourcefulness, effective communication, flexibility, adaptability, decisiveness, and a comprehensive understanding of the hospital's overarching needs. This individual will act as a clinical leader and resource within the unit, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate the progression of patient care and meet unit objectives.
The Lead Nurse Coordinator will also take on a patient assignment based on the unit's requirements. As delegated by the Nurse Manager, this role includes monitoring and addressing opportunities to ensure compliance with regulations, quality effectiveness, and a positive patient experience. When functioning as a clinical Staff RN, the Lead Nurse Coordinator is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for a designated group of patients in an inpatient setting, demonstrating proficiency in delivering care primarily to an adult population.
Experience Requirements:
A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant clinical experience is essential, particularly in the management and care of target patient populations specific to the area of employment. For positions in Critical Care, a minimum of 2 years of Critical Care experience is required unless otherwise approved by the Unit Manager.
Educational Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is mandatory. Consideration will be given to current Froedtert Health non-BSN prepared RNs with demonstrated leadership capabilities and at least 5 years of experience in an acute care environment, along with a formal commitment to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing within 5 years of commencing the role. If an incumbent has been functioning as a Charge RN with 2-3 years of experience in this capacity, the Bachelor’s Degree requirement may be waived.
Specialized Skills:
A proven track record of leadership roles is essential, including positions such as Shared Governance unit-based council chair, Committee chair, Preceptor, or equipment/process Super User/Champion.
Licensure Requirements:
A current Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a Multi-state Nursing License from a participating state in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) is required. Additionally, certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) or an equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the AHA is preferred.
