Job Title: Plumber (Lead)

Reports To: Maintenance Foreman

Job Summary:

The Plumber (Lead) is a critical role within the Bernalillo Public Schools maintenance team, responsible for providing support to district campuses by maintaining plumbing systems and their components in safe operating condition. This position requires a high degree of skill in troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance, as well as the ability to instruct, train, lead, and supervise less skilled tradesmen.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs Troubleshooting, Repairs, and Preventative Maintenance: Utilize specialized maintenance work skills to identify and resolve issues with plumbing systems, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely.
  • Provides Excellent Customer Service: Interact with district staff and students in a professional and courteous manner, addressing their plumbing-related needs and concerns.
  • Purchases Supplies and Materials: Obtain approval from the supervisor to purchase necessary supplies and materials, considering the best value for the district.
  • Coordinates and Performs Quality Control: Oversee the work of contractors hired to perform plumbing maintenance repairs, ensuring quality work and adherence to district standards.
  • Prepares Job Estimates and Prioritizes Tasks: Develop detailed estimates and prioritize tasks to complete assignments efficiently and effectively.
  • Receives and Records Work Performed: Accurately record all work performed in the district's electronic work order system, including hours worked, materials used, and contracted services.
  • Maintains Tools, Equipment, and Vehicles: Ensure all assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles are properly maintained and used safely, following manufacturer guidelines and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Performs Work Safely: Adhere to the Maintenance Safety Plan, using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and following proper safety protocols.
  • Assists with Project Planning: Collaborate with the Maintenance Foreman to plan projects and ensure effective execution.
  • Serves as a Consultant: Provide expertise and guidance to the supervisor and other staff members on plumbing-related matters.
  • Complies with Regulations and Standards: Adhere to state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession, BPS Employee Standards of Conduct, and local, state, and federal regulations.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED: Required
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License: Required for operating vehicles
  • New Mexico Journeyman Plumber License: Required
  • Ability to Read and Interpret Drawings: Required to read and work from sketches, diagrams, and construction drawings
  • Cost Estimation and Consultation Skills: Required to make cost estimates and function as a consultant in areas of specialization
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Standing, Driving, Sitting, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Lifting: Frequent
    • Ability to Operate a Delivery Vehicle: Required in all kinds of weather
    • Hand/Eye Coordination and Normal Range of Sight: Required
    • Lifting and Pulling: Occasional
    • Work in Lift Equipment: Up to 50 feet above ground level
    • Full Mobility of Fingers/Hands: Required

  • Chemical Safety and Hygiene: Required to read, understand, and observe all precautions and proper methods of use on all chemicals, equipment, tools, and materials
  • Good Physical Condition: Required
  • Completion of Required Training: Required
  • Knowledge of Universal Hygiene Precautions: Required

Equipment/Material Handled:

Hand tools, equipment, chemicals, ladders, platforms, and materials particular to this trade skill. Work vehicle, material handling equipment.

Work Environment:

The work environment varies greatly, from solitary shop work to working in school facilities with large numbers of people. Conditions range from working outside in extreme heat to comfortable building and shop settings, to working outside in very cold temperatures. Wet, dusty, and dark areas are frequently encountered. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After-hours work may be required. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
