Summer Enrichment Program Instructor

This role involves leading engaging, non-credit educational camps as part of the Summer Youth Program at Hagerstown Community College. Instructors will facilitate either new or established camps that have received approval from the Program Manager and the College for Kids Team Lead.

The number of camps assigned to each instructor will depend on their specific expertise, the interests of the students, and the overall schedule of camps. Each camp runs for 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM. The summer program typically operates from mid-June to early August, with varying dates each year.

We are currently seeking instructors for the following subjects:
  • Art
  • Science/STEAM/Ecology
  • Physics
Additional subjects in the Summer Youth Program may include, but are not limited to:
  • Biology, Chemistry, and Medicine
  • Computer Programming, Digital Animation
  • Dance and Music
  • Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Environmental Science and Nature
  • Fine and Studio Art, Photography, and Crafting
  • Language, Literature, and Writing
  • History and World Cultures
  • Personal Finance and Life Planning
  • SAT Preparation
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The Summer Enrichment Program Instructor reports directly to the Program Manager for Youth Programs and the Team Lead for the Summer Youth Program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop comprehensive, engaging lesson plans tailored to captivate students.
  • Submit camp descriptions, learning objectives, and daily lesson plans promptly to the Program Manager and Team Lead.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to accommodate diverse student needs and levels.
  • Integrate enjoyable, hands-on activities that align with educational goals.
  • Utilize effective technology and various instructional methods to enhance learning.
  • Foster active student participation through discussions and critical thinking exercises.
  • Encourage open-minded inquiry among students.
  • Promote a culture of cooperation and mutual respect within the classroom.
  • Incorporate multicultural perspectives into teaching practices as appropriate.
  • Complete the orientation process for adjunct faculty in the Summer Youth Programming.
  • Submit necessary personnel forms for employment, including background checks.
  • Provide master copies or lists of instructional materials in a timely manner.
  • Commit to being present and engaged for the entire duration of each camp session.
  • Complete camp evaluations and other required documentation as directed.
  • Participate in the student complaint resolution process as needed.
  • Uphold and enforce health and disciplinary protocols established by the College for Kids program.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulations and policies related to summer youth programs.
QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education and Experience
    • Appropriate educational background (varies based on the subject taught).
    • Prior teaching experience.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Basic computer proficiency for classroom technology use.
    • Strong presentation and demonstration skills.
    • Ability to establish rapport with students.
    • Proven classroom management skills for K-12 students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience teaching K-12 students.
  • Background in camp or similar educational settings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles to reflect cultural understanding in a diverse classroom.
