Position Overview
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University is seeking exceptional candidates for the role of Assistant Professor within the Health Programs (HP) appointment system, focusing on Community Medicine and Primary Care in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will engage in a blend of clinical service, educational instruction, and research initiatives. The distribution of time among these responsibilities will be adaptable, aligning with the applicant's expertise and interests. The current Primary Care team includes multiple faculty members and support staff, dedicated to training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, veterinary nursing students, and interns. The Primary Care service addresses outpatient appointments for routine wellness and medical issues in companion animals, alongside performing sterilization and dental procedures.
Community Medicine Program
This role will oversee a mobile primary care/surgical unit that collaborates with animal welfare organizations to deliver essential services such as spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and health examinations for shelter animals. The position entails fostering professional relationships with these organizations, managing the mobile unit's operations, and ensuring the provision of care and resources. An additional licensed veterinary technician and a mobile unit coordinator will be recruited to support this initiative.
Educational Contributions
The position involves extensive teaching responsibilities, transitioning from a primarily hospital-based instruction model to a hybrid approach that includes both mobile and in-hospital teaching. Instruction will encompass surgical and anesthetic supervision for students, aiming to provide hands-on experience in a shelter environment. The candidate will also be responsible for the continuous enhancement of didactic and laboratory courses, developing educational materials for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programs.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school and be eligible for licensure in Michigan. Preferred qualifications include five years of clinically relevant experience and expertise in primary care and shelter medicine.
