Position Overview
Location: SoHo NYC

The primary role of the Grocery Buyer is to manage the ordering, replenishment, and presentation of store merchandise, while collaborating effectively with team members. The in-store buyer will oversee inventory management and restock products based on established guidelines. This position also involves organizing promotional displays and upholding high standards of store presentation. All roles at Happier Grocery emphasize maintaining a positive company image through courteous, friendly, and efficient service to both customers and colleagues. Each position must adhere to the store's Standard Operating Procedures and be prepared to fulfill responsibilities inherent to other team roles. Team members are expected to support Happier Grocery's core values and promote store initiatives while ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generate purchase orders for all grocery categories in collaboration with the Director of Category Management and Store Managers.
  • Replenish stock through established procurement processes.
  • Order both perishable and non-perishable grocery items while maintaining optimal back stock levels.
  • Monitor and address open purchase order reports for accuracy and timeliness, including processing invoices and returns.
  • Analyze sales data to optimize inventory levels and reduce out-of-stock occurrences.
  • Manage spoilage and shrinkage; participate in inventory counts.
  • Complete spoilage reports and inventory management tasks as required.
  • Ensure timely and accurate product orders to maintain inventory turnover.
  • Assist leadership in conducting inventory assessments.
  • Maximize sales potential through effective product preparation, storage, rotation, stocking, and merchandising.
  • Perform assigned opening, mid, and closing duties; ensure pricing and signage accuracy.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in coolers, freezers, and back stock areas.
  • Stay informed on customer purchasing trends and industry developments.
  • Support corporate initiatives as needed.
  • Be capable of receiving deliveries.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by store or corporate leadership.
  • Adhere to established procedures, including health and sanitation standards, and maintain safe work practices.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of retail grocery experience or equivalent.
  • Preferred experience or interest in natural foods and products.
  • Comprehensive understanding of grocery products.
  • Familiarity with grocery merchandising standards.
  • Ability to educate team members on product knowledge and foster enthusiasm.
  • Strong basic math skills.
  • Proficient in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and ordering systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and respectfully to team members, customers, and vendors.
  • Commitment to meeting customer service expectations in all interactions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures; effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong work ethic and capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or walk for 6-8 hours during an 8-hour workday.
  • Frequent hand use for grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, and pulling.
  • Work involves bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
  • Exposure to FDA-approved cleaning agents.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures: below 32°F (freezing), 32-40°F (refrigerated), and above 90°F.
  • Ability to work in wet and cold conditions.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to meet departmental needs.

The salary range for this position is between $65,000 and $70,000 annually, determined by factors such as prior experience, qualifications, and skills.
