With over 21 outpatient care locations and ambulatory surgery centers in Wayne and Oakland Counties, Sinai-Grace is also recognized as one of only ten hospitals nationwide to receive a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aimed at enhancing cardiac care standards.

Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the Director of Surgical Services and the supervising physician, the RN First Assistant is responsible for delivering direct patient care to individuals undergoing surgical interventions. In this expanded perioperative role, the RN assists as either a primary or secondary aide during surgical operations, ensuring optimal patient outcomes through collaboration with the surgical team. Responsibilities also include developing patient care plans in alignment with nursing protocols and working closely with healthcare professionals to guarantee high-quality care delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Actively engages in the intra-operative phase of surgical procedures by providing essential support to the surgeon, ensuring safe and effective patient care.

2. In addition to standard intra-operative nursing duties, the RN First Assistant may perform specialized tasks under the direct supervision of the surgeon, including:

a. Handling tissues.

b. Ensuring proper exposure.

c. Performing suturing.

d. Utilizing surgical instruments.

e. Managing hemostasis.

f. Closing wounds and applying surgical dressings.

3. Evaluates postoperative patient needs and delivers care as directed by the surgeon, including patient education as required.

4. May fulfill all responsibilities of a Staff Nurse, exemplifying professionalism at all times.

5. Implements aseptic techniques and infection control measures, recognizing potential safety hazards.

6. Demonstrates a commitment to professional practice essential for effective patient care management, focusing on ongoing professional development.

7. Acknowledges the significance of efficiency and cost-effectiveness in service delivery, supporting initiatives aimed at resource conservation while maintaining high-quality patient services.

8. Upholds the vision, mission, and objectives of the Detroit Medical Center through continuous quality improvement efforts.

9. Takes responsibility for identifying personal strengths and areas for improvement, actively updating knowledge and skills pertinent to assigned duties.

10. Maintains and provides annual documentation of mandatory Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.

Qualifications:

1. Graduation from an accredited nursing program.

2. BSN is preferred.

3. Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Michigan.

4. Successful completion of an RN First Assist course based on AORN curriculum.

5. Certification as a RN First Assistant (CRNFA) is required unless enrolled in an AORN-approved internship, with certification needed within three years of starting the internship.

6. A minimum of two years of recent experience as a scrub/circulator in a hospital operating room setting.

7. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

8. ACLS certification is preferred.
