With over 21 outpatient care locations and ambulatory surgical centers across Wayne and Oakland Counties, Sinai-Grace is also one of only ten hospitals in the country to receive a prestigious grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aimed at enhancing cardiac care standards.
Position Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Surgical Services and the attending physician, the RN First Assistant is responsible for delivering direct patient care to individuals undergoing surgical procedures. In this expanded perioperative role, the RN assists the surgeon as either a primary or secondary assistant during operations. Additional responsibilities include planning patient care in accordance with nursing protocols and collaborating with healthcare team members to ensure the highest quality of patient care is delivered. The RN may also be required to fulfill duties typical of a staff nurse.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Actively participates in the intra-operative phase of surgical interventions by providing direct support to the surgeon, ensuring safe and effective patient care.
2. In addition to standard intra-operative nursing duties, specific responsibilities unique to the RN First Assistant under the direct supervision of the surgeon may include:
a. Handling of tissues.
b. Ensuring proper exposure.
c. Performing suturing tasks.
d. Utilizing surgical instruments.
e. Managing hemostasis.
f. Conducting wound closure and applying surgical dressings.
3. Evaluates the postoperative requirements of patients and administers care as directed by the surgeon, including patient education as necessary.
4. May undertake all responsibilities associated with a Staff Nurse role, exemplifying professionalism at all times.
5. Implements principles of asepsis and infection control, recognizing potential safety hazards.
6. Demonstrates a commitment to professional practice essential for effective patient care management, with a focus on ongoing professional development.
7. Acknowledges the significance of efficiency and cost-effectiveness in service delivery, supporting initiatives to conserve resources while maintaining high-quality care.
8. Shows dedication to the vision, mission, and objectives of the Detroit Medical Center through continuous quality improvement efforts.
9. Maintains accountability for identifying personal strengths and areas for improvement, updating knowledge and skills necessary for the role.
10. Ensures annual documentation of mandatory Basic Life Support (BLS) competency is maintained. Demonstrates the interpersonal skills required for effective interaction with physicians, hospital staff, patients, and their families.
Qualifications:
1. Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
3. Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Michigan.
4. Successful completion of an RN First Assist course aligned with AORN curriculum.
5. Certification as a RN First Assistant (CRNFA) is required unless enrolled in an AORN-approved internship, with certification needed within three years of starting the internship.
6. Minimum of two years of recent experience as a scrub/circulator in a hospital operating room setting.
7. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
8. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
