Job Overview

As a Patient Care Technician in the Inpatient Rehabilitation unit, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients recovering from various conditions. Your responsibilities will encompass a range of patient care activities, ensuring that each individual receives the attention and support they need during their recovery journey.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts assigned patient care tasks utilizing evidence-based practices tailored to the specific needs of the patient demographic.
  • Monitors and records patients' vital signs, height, and weight as necessary, based on the type of care required.
  • Provides empathetic support, actively listening to patients' concerns and addressing their inquiries.
  • Recognizes and reports any changes in patient condition or potential risks to the healthcare team to avert crises.
  • Gathers clinical data and pertinent information about patients, relaying this to the care team.
  • Assists in repositioning, transferring, ambulating, and transporting patients safely.
  • Aids patients with essential daily activities, including personal hygiene, eating, restroom use, and dressing.
  • Monitors and documents patient intake and output accurately.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (ECGs) as instructed by healthcare professionals.
  • Conducts phlebotomy and specimen collection as required.
  • Ensures that care provided is appropriate for the patient's age, cultural background, and developmental stage, fostering a safe environment.
  • Establishes and maintains professional and therapeutic relationships with patients, families, team members, and healthcare providers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED is preferred; candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting is advantageous.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids is inherent to the role.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination are essential for executing patient care procedures effectively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Frequent contact with sharp instruments and objects.
  • Occasional exposure to mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic substances, and electrical hazards.
  • High noise levels may be present in the work environment.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking are required.
  • Responsibilities include transporting and positioning patients and equipment safely.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
  • Interaction with patients who may exhibit aggressive behavior is possible.

UNIT DETAILS:

The Rehabilitation unit is a specialized 12-bed acute care facility focused on patients with conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and general debility. Our collaborative team approach includes nursing, therapy, care management, and medical providers dedicated to enhancing patient independence and facilitating smooth transitions to subsequent levels of care.

SCHEDULE:

  • Rotating shifts of 8 hours, including morning and evening schedules.
  • Weekend shifts are required on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Participation in a rotating holiday schedule is necessary.

SCHEDULED HOURS:

32 hours per week with a Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) of 0.8.

Overtime Status:

This position is not exempt from overtime.
