Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at ThedaCare. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for collecting and processing patient specimens, performing waived testing, and supporting patient testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Specimen Collection and Processing: Obtain patient specimens from inpatients and outpatients, adhering to proper identification protocols and techniques to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Waived Testing and Lab Functions: Perform waived testing, load analyzers, and perform lab functions as needed to meet patient demands.
  • OSHA and Department Policies: Adhere to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Training and Development: Provide training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.
  • Computer Functions: Perform specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed, including entering physician's orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests.
  • Order Entry and Review: Enter, activate, and/or review physician orders in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
  • Supply Management: Maintain supplies and assist with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
  • Special Specimen Collections: Perform special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Age Requirement: Must be 18 years of age.
  • Certification: Completion of BLS Certification will be required for candidates working at ThedaCare Medical Center – Wild Rose.
Physical Demands
  • Mobility: Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance.
  • Exposure to Blood-Borne Pathogens: Job classification is exposed to blood-borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties.
Work Environment
  • Medical Setting: Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials.
  • Sharp Objects and Instruments: Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments.
  • Chemicals and Biohazardous Materials: Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • Aggressive Patients: Occasional contact with aggressive and/or combative patients.
  • Computer Use: Use of computers throughout the work day.
  • Repetitive Motion: Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers.
