Rehabilitation Patient Care Technician

Job Overview
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts assigned patient care tasks utilizing evidence-based methodologies and specific skills tailored to the patient demographic.
- Monitors and records patients' vital signs, height, and weight as necessary, depending on the patient classification.
- Delivers empathetic care, actively listening to patients' issues and providing guidance in response to their inquiries.
- Recognizes and reports any alterations in patient condition or potential risks to avert emergencies.
- Gathers clinical information and data regarding patients and communicates findings to the healthcare team.
- Assists in repositioning, transferring, mobilizing, and transporting patients as required.
- Supports patients with fundamental needs including personal hygiene, nutrition, restroom use, and dressing.
- Records and communicates patient intake and output metrics.
- Administers electrocardiograms (ECGs) as instructed.
- Conducts phlebotomy and specimen collection procedures.
- Ensures care is suitable for the patient's age, cultural background, and developmental stage within a safe environment.
- Exhibits professional and therapeutic interactions with patients, families, colleagues, and healthcare providers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or GED is preferred; candidates must be at least 18 years old, with exceptions for specific facilities.
- Prior experience in healthcare settings is advantageous.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Capability to move freely, including standing, bending, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Job entails exposure to bloodborne pathogens while executing duties.
- Manual dexterity and coordination are necessary for performing patient care tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Regular exposure to sharp instruments and objects.
- Occasional contact with moving mechanical components, fumes, airborne particles, toxic substances, and electrical hazards.
- May encounter high noise levels in the workplace.
- Extended periods of standing and walking are required.
- Involves transporting and positioning patients and equipment, with minimal risk of injury if proper techniques are applied.
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmaceutical agents.
- Occasional interaction with patients who may exhibit aggressive behavior.
This position necessitates adherence to department-specific competencies.
UNIT DETAILS:
The rehabilitation unit comprises 12 acute inpatient beds, with an average patient census of 7. Common diagnoses include stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and general debility. The average length of stay is approximately 12 days. Our collaborative team includes nursing staff, therapy professionals, care management, and medical providers, all focused on advancing patient care and fostering independence before transitioning to subsequent care levels. The facility is recognized as a level II trauma center, catering to a higher acuity patient population. Core therapy team members consist of a physiatrist, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and a recreational therapist, all dedicated to delivering exceptional care and providing valuable learning experiences.
SCHEDULE:
- Rotating shifts of 8 hours, including morning and evening schedules.
- Weekend shifts are required on an alternating basis.
- Rotating holiday shifts are also part of the schedule.
