Job Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) plays a crucial role in delivering quality care to patients in the inpatient rehabilitation setting. This position involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at supporting patients' physical and emotional well-being.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts assigned patient care tasks utilizing evidence-based practices tailored to the specific needs of the patient demographic.
  • Monitors and records vital signs, height, and weight as necessary, ensuring accuracy based on patient classification.
  • Provides empathetic support, actively listening to patients' concerns and addressing inquiries to facilitate understanding.
  • Recognizes and reports any alterations in patient condition or potential risks to avert emergencies.
  • Gathers and documents clinical information regarding patients, communicating findings to the healthcare team.
  • Assists with patient mobility, including repositioning, transferring, and transporting individuals safely.
  • Aids patients with fundamental needs such as personal hygiene, nutrition, restroom use, and dressing.
  • Collects and reports data related to patient intake and output.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (ECGs) as instructed by medical staff.
  • Conducts phlebotomy and specimen collection as required.
  • Ensures care is appropriate for the patient's age, cultural background, and developmental stage while fostering a safe environment.
  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and healthcare providers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED is preferred; candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting is advantageous.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Capability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting up to 50 pounds independently.
  • The role involves exposure to bloodborne pathogens during the execution of job duties.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination are essential for carrying out patient care tasks effectively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Regular exposure to sharp instruments and medical equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to mechanical components, fumes, airborne particles, and hazardous materials.
  • May encounter high noise levels in the work area.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking are expected.
  • Involves transporting and positioning patients and equipment safely, minimizing injury risk through proper techniques.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous substances.
  • May interact with patients exhibiting aggressive behavior.

This position requires adherence to specific departmental competencies.

UNIT DETAILS:

The rehabilitation unit is a specialized acute care environment with a focus on patients recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and general debility. The average patient stay is approximately 12 days, with a collaborative team approach involving nursing, therapy, and care management professionals to enhance patient independence before transitioning to subsequent care levels.

SCHEDULE:

  • Rotating shifts of 8 hours, including morning and evening schedules.
  • Weekend shifts are required on an alternating basis.
  • Participation in a rotating holiday schedule is necessary.

HOURS:

Scheduled weekly hours are 32, with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 0.8.

Overtime Status:

This position is not exempt from overtime.
