Position Summary

This position involves performing advanced accounting tasks and supporting the establishment of a robust accounting system, alongside a comprehensive framework of controls aimed at minimizing risks, enhancing the precision of the City's financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Leading the preparation, oversight, and modification of the City's annual and project budgets.
  • Conducting thorough examinations of financial records to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Generating monthly entries for the general ledger system and preparing budgetary reports for department leaders.
  • Assisting departments with financial and budgetary reports on a regular basis.
  • Reviewing and preparing monthly bank reconciliations and special financial reports as required.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal and state financial reporting and grant requirements.
  • Designing and implementing effective internal controls for financial accounting and reporting.
  • Monitoring expenditures and preparing necessary budget adjustments.
  • Communicating with department heads regarding budgetary issues and expenditure discrepancies.
  • Assisting auditors during the annual financial audit process.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A strong understanding of governmental accounting principles and practices.
  • Experience with local and state legislation related to municipal financial records.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to prepare clear financial reports.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships.

Education and Experience
A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, along with a minimum of five years of relevant accounting experience, is required. Experience in governmental accounting and budgeting is preferred. Advanced degrees or professional certifications may substitute for some experience.
