Gastroenterology Nurse Specialist

Job Summary:
The Direct Access Nurse in Gastroenterology plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care by providing direct access to gastroenterology services. This position involves coordinating appointments, managing endoscopy schedules, and delivering education on gastrointestinal health and procedures. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a passion for patient advocacy.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Scope of Practice: Adhere to the scope of RN practice as outlined by the MS Board of Nursing, regulatory standards, and hospital policy.
2. Professional Growth: Maintain professional and technical knowledge and pursue professional growth opportunities.
3. Endoscopy Appointments: Manage the schedule and reschedule of colonoscopy appointments.
4. Patient Education: Provide information to patients about gastrointestinal health, procedures, and pre/post-operative care instructions.
5. Monitoring: In-basket and handle incoming referrals. If referrals require an OV, schedule it.
6. Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely patient records, notes, educational materials provided, and appointment schedules.
7. Quality Improvement: Participate in quality assurance initiatives and contribute to the development of protocols for direct access services.
8. Support and Advocacy: Act as a liaison for patients, advocating for their needs and navigating them through the healthcare system.
9. Confidentiality: Keep access to protected health information secure and confidential.
Qualifications:
1. Education: Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) or LPN.
2. Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN)(LPN) license.
3. Experience: Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in gastroenterology, outpatient care, or a related field.
4. Skills: Strong clinical assessment and communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems.
5. Certifications: BLS certification required.
