Position Overview

This role is situated within the Division of Civil Law, specifically in the Employment Law Section. Candidates may be assigned to various locations, including Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego. Please indicate your preferred location in your cover letter.

Key Responsibilities

Attorneys in the Investigations Group are primarily responsible for conducting comprehensive inquiries and investigations. These investigations serve both internal clients and various state entities across California. The scope of work includes:

  • Management inquiries
  • Fact-gathering and fact-finding
  • Policy violation investigations

Investigations will encompass claims related to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on protected characteristics, including but not limited to:

  • Sexual harassment
  • Age discrimination

Additionally, the role involves investigating allegations of misconduct, such as unprofessional behavior, dishonesty, misuse of state resources, and retaliation against whistleblowers.

Collaboration and Support

Attorneys may also assist the broader Employment Law Section team, which focuses on employment litigation defense. This team comprises approximately 100 attorneys and paralegals operating throughout California. The litigation practice includes:

  • Jury trials
  • Evidentiary hearings
  • Appellate arguments in state and federal courts

The Employment Law Section represents various state agencies in legal matters involving claims of discrimination, harassment, and whistleblower retaliation, among others.
