This role is situated within the Division of Civil Law, specifically in the Employment Law Section, with potential placements in various locations across California. Please indicate your preferred city in your cover letter.

Attorneys assigned to the Investigations Group within the Employment Law Section (ELS) primarily engage in conducting thorough investigations. These investigations serve both internal clients and various state entities throughout California. The attorneys undertake a range of inquiries and investigations, including management inquiries, evidence gathering, fact-finding missions, and policy violation assessments. They investigate allegations of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on several protected characteristics, such as claims of sexual harassment and age-related promotion issues. Additionally, they address misconduct allegations, including unprofessional behavior, dishonesty, misuse of state resources, and retaliation against whistleblowers, among others. The Investigations Group operates out of Sacramento, but attorneys have the flexibility to work from Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego.

Moreover, attorneys may occasionally assist the broader ELS team, which primarily focuses on employment litigation defense, and may be reassigned to this larger group. ELS comprises approximately 100 attorneys and paralegals practicing across California. The litigation practice of ELS frequently involves jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and appellate arguments in both state and federal courts. ELS provides legal representation to state agencies in connection with lawsuits alleging discrimination, harassment, and whistleblower retaliation, among other claims. Beyond employment law, ELS represents clients such as the California Highway Patrol, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the State Lottery Commission, and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in a diverse array of legal matters. ELS attorneys also handle disciplinary proceedings before the State Personnel Board.

All attorneys within ELS are expected to be prepared to manage civil litigation matters, including representing clients in trial settings.
