This role is situated within the Division of Civil Law, specifically in the Employment Law Section, with potential placements in various cities across California. Applicants should indicate their preferred location in the cover letter.

Attorneys assigned to the Investigations Group within the Employment Law Section primarily engage in investigative work. These investigations serve both internal clients and various state entities throughout California. The scope of inquiries includes management assessments, evidence collection, fact-finding missions, and policy violation investigations. Attorneys will investigate allegations of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on a range of protected characteristics, such as sexual harassment claims and age-related promotion issues. Additionally, they will look into misconduct allegations, including unprofessional behavior, dishonesty, misuse of state resources, and retaliation against whistleblowers.

While the Investigations Group is based in Sacramento, attorneys have the flexibility to work from Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego.

Moreover, attorneys may occasionally assist the broader Employment Law Section team, which focuses on employment litigation defense and may transition to this larger group. The Employment Law Section comprises approximately 100 attorneys and paralegals operating in various offices throughout California. The litigation practice frequently involves jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and appellate proceedings in both state and federal courts. The Section represents state agencies in lawsuits concerning claims of discrimination, harassment, and whistleblower retaliation, among other legal matters. Clients include entities such as the California Highway Patrol, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the State Lottery Commission, and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, covering a wide array of legal issues. Additionally, attorneys in this section handle disciplinary cases before the State Personnel Board.

All attorneys in the Employment Law Section are expected to possess the capability and willingness to manage civil litigation matters, including client representation at trial.
