Job Summary

The University of Utah is seeking a skilled Medical Assistant to join our team. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures, ensuring accurate and timely completion of tasks.
  • Report patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff members, promoting timely interventions and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Perform CLIA-waved lab tests, accurately reporting results to relevant personnel.
  • Assist with procedures, such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and injections, under the supervision of licensed staff.
  • Monitor and maintain patient examination rooms, unit areas, and equipment, ensuring a clean and safe environment.
  • Answer telephones, forward messages, and schedule appointments and procedures as directed by licensed staff.
  • Assist with routine clerical functions, including filing medical information, locating and compiling department charts, and entering charges for billing purposes.
  • Attend mandatory education sessions, including infection prevention and control, safety, CPR, equipment usage, and procedures, to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills.
  • May perform patient phlebotomies, apply leads and monitors, and assist with patient and family education, under the supervision of licensed staff.
  • May assist with transportation of patients and instruct in Basic Life Support requirements.
  • May perform IV access and other duties as assigned by department leadership.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including physical demands and working conditions.
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills and human relations and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in specific clinic specialty skills within six weeks of hire.
  • Ability to withstand physical demands of the job, including prolonged standing, moving, and lifting patients.

Qualifications

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system.
  • One of the following certifications: Advanced EMT, Paramedic, CMA, ABR-OE, RMA, NCMA, NRCMA, or Clinical Medical Assistant.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting, with potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials. Employees must be able to meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling patients and equipment.
