Position Summary

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a vital community resource dedicated to empowering individuals through education. Our Workforce Development programs are designed to create pathways for economic and civic engagement for individuals and families in the South Bronx. The College Retention Specialist plays a crucial role in this mission by providing essential college access services to participants in the Post-Secondary Pathways Program (PSP) and students at The College Academy.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Education Services Manager, the College Retention Specialist will:
  • Achieve annual enrollment targets for college admissions, aiming for 150 students.
  • Deliver retention services to ensure that 60% of enrolled participants successfully complete their first two semesters.
  • Offer comprehensive support to students throughout their college journey during their first and second years.
  • Maintain a consistent presence at The College Academy, dedicating approximately 10 hours per week year-round.
  • Participate in all relevant training sessions and workshops.
  • Conduct workshops for high school seniors and community members to facilitate college readiness.
  • Assist students with college applications, including searching, applying, and enrolling.
  • Provide case management by maintaining regular communication with students.
  • Monitor student progress through the application and enrollment process.
  • Guide students through financial aid applications and verification.
  • Help organize and lead events related to the college application process.
  • Collaborate with college counselors to track the status of graduating seniors.
  • Maintain accurate data reporting systems and conduct routine audits for quality assurance.
  • Generate reports on student application and enrollment metrics.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to enhance service delivery.
  • Engage in departmental meetings, trainings, and community events as needed.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Current college student in New York City, preferably with at least one year completed.
  • High school diploma or GED; an associate degree in education or human services is advantageous.
  • Strong verbal communication skills; bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Experience in outreach and community engagement within urban settings.
  • Familiarity with the Washington Heights and Mott Haven neighborhoods is highly desirable.
  • Self-motivated and organized with basic computer skills.
  • Must pass background checks.
Work Environment

This position is full-time, typically scheduled Monday through Friday, with standard business hours. The work environment is business casual, primarily within a school office setting.
