Position Summary

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is dedicated to empowering individuals through education, fostering economic and civic opportunities for all community members. Our Workforce Development initiatives are designed to provide exceptional youth and adult programming within community centers.

The College Retention Specialist plays a crucial role within the Post-Secondary Pathways Program, delivering college access services to participants and collaborating with various stakeholders to support high school seniors and GED students in their transition to higher education.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Education Services Manager, the College Retention Specialist will:
  • Achieve annual enrollment targets, ensuring a minimum of 150 students enroll in college each year.
  • Provide retention services to support at least 60% of participants in completing their first two semesters of college.
  • Offer comprehensive support for students during their initial years in college.
  • Maintain regular office hours at designated locations, providing consistent access to services.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Facilitate educational workshops for students and community members throughout the year.
  • Assist students with the college application process, including documentation and enrollment procedures.
  • Manage student cases through regular communication and meetings.
  • Monitor student progress and provide guidance on financial aid applications.
  • Organize and lead events related to the college transition process.
  • Collaborate with college counselors to track student status and address any challenges.
  • Maintain accurate data reporting systems and conduct regular audits for quality assurance.
  • Generate reports on student application and enrollment metrics.
  • Work collaboratively with a team of instructors and specialists to deliver integrated services.
  • Engage in departmental meetings and assist in planning community events.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Current college student in New York City, with a preference for those who have completed at least one year.
  • High school diploma or GED; an associate degree in education or human services is advantageous.
  • Strong verbal communication skills; bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
  • Experience in outreach and community engagement, particularly in urban settings.
  • Familiarity with the Washington Heights and Mott Haven neighborhoods is a plus.
  • Self-motivated and organized with basic computer proficiency.
  • Must pass background checks and clearances.
