Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Softgoods Design and Fabrication Specialist to join our team at MRI Technologies. As a Softgoods Design and Fabrication Specialist, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and fabricating new and innovative functional softgoods articles for the manned spaceflight program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development: Design, develop, and fabricate new and innovative functional softgoods articles for the manned spaceflight program, including stowage solutions, structural inflatables, ancillary space suit equipment, thermal blankets, and general deep space product design.
  • Presentations and Collaboration: Clearly and thoroughly present design concepts and considerations to stakeholders, and collaborate with engineers and designers to understand requirements of working on a variety of systems and hardware.
  • Softgoods Fabrication: Perform sewing machine maintenance, repair, and custom modifications to tailor the sewing machine for unique stitching operations, and create patterns and develop mockups for verifying fit and function of softgood articles.
  • Interpretation and Review: Interpret fabrication drawings to assemble sewn products, and review fabrication drawings before final release for flight fabrication.
  • Manufacturing and Innovation: Seek new manufacturing techniques and innovative materials to improve softgoods design and fabrication processes.
  • Travel and Physical Requirements: Occasionally travel to other NASA centers to perform softgoods fabrication and installation, and be able to lift and transport materials and equipment.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Typically requires a HS diploma and 5 years of experience or BS in Engineering Technology or related field, with 3+ years' experience in a soft goods lab environment with emphasis in soft goods design and fabrication.
  • Skills and Expertise: Demonstrated capability to independently devise solutions to complex design problems, expertise in a wide range of hands-on fabrication, and proficiency utilizing Adobe, AutoCAD, and Rhino CAD software.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Demonstrated success working with a team, and ability to clearly and thoroughly present design concepts and considerations to stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: BA, BFA, or BS in Industrial Design or equivalent, with experience in aerospace product design processes, including ability to read, understand, and create fabrication drawings.
  • Skills and Expertise: Experienced with fabricating processes for prototyping and flight soft good products, and experienced in Adobe, AutoCAD, and Rhino CAD software.
Essential Functions
  • Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Physical Requirements: Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods, and may require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
  • Equipment and Machines: Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
  • Attendance: Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
