Job Title: Electrical Engineer - Standards

We are seeking a highly skilled Electrical Engineer - Standards to join our team at Hawaiian Electric Company. As a key member of our engineering department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our electrical systems.

Job Summary:

The Electrical Engineer - Standards will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing electrical standards and guidelines for our company. This includes evaluating and selecting standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, as well as making minor adaptations and modifications as needed. You will work closely with our team to ensure that our electrical systems meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement electrical standards and guidelines for our company.
  • Evaluate and select standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Make minor adaptations and modifications to electrical systems as needed.
  • Work closely with our team to ensure that electrical systems meet safety, reliability, and efficiency standards.
  • Conduct project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare and manage cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts for projects assigned.
  • Perform project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate work by consulting engineers, evaluate proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and make recommendations.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college-level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years' relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications, such as spreadsheets, word processing, and ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Good leadership skills, including effective written, oral, and listening communications skills and interpersonal skills, to work effectively with all levels of the company, outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups, and customers.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult, and/or sensitive issues, with professionalism, tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Ability to do in-depth analytical and administrative skills for tasks such as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints, conflicting priorities.
