Overview of the Role

The Surgical Services Manager is accountable for the comprehensive leadership of the Operating Room, ensuring optimal operations around the clock. This role encompasses both strategic and tactical planning, staff development, resource allocation, budget oversight, and the continuous enhancement of quality standards to deliver exceptional patient care and experience. The Manager exemplifies the core values of North Memorial Health.

Key Responsibilities:

• Directs the management of the Operating Room, focusing on service scheduling, resource optimization, productivity enhancement, and space management. Collaborates with relevant support services to secure necessary resources.

• Provides visionary leadership and management oversight to the Operating Room team.

• Engages in strategic and operational planning for Surgical Services, executing objectives and developing programs tailored to patient needs and departmental goals.

• Ensures the delivery of high-quality, cost-efficient patient care services. Identifies and implements operational improvements to enhance service quality, productivity, and financial performance.

• Guides process and system enhancements in alignment with hospital quality improvement initiatives, such as timely starts and effective scheduling.

• Evaluates patient expectations and outcomes, ensuring a high standard of patient experience.

• Achieves financial performance targets for the Operating Room, overseeing the development of capital and operational budgets while managing financial activities such as forecasting and billing.

• Oversees human resource functions within the Operating Room, selecting qualified personnel, providing performance feedback, and fostering a values-driven work environment.

• Facilitates the orientation, education, and training of Operating Room staff, ensuring the maintenance of high competency levels.

• Ensures compliance with all accrediting, licensing, and regulatory standards relevant to operational responsibilities.

• Monitors and evaluates key performance indicators that reflect the quality of care and service delivery.

• Initiates actions to address identified challenges and recommends operational changes to enhance service and performance.

• Cultivates positive relationships with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other essential physician stakeholders.

• Communicates effectively within the hospital leadership team, acting as a liaison between management, staff, and external partners.

• Drives accountability for customer care and operational outcomes, collaborating with team members to achieve departmental objectives.

• Develops team talent through effective recruitment, engagement, and retention strategies.

• Organizes and schedules team activities to maximize productivity and efficiency.

• Focuses on metrics that gauge key business outcomes, translating organizational vision into actionable strategies for the team.

Qualifications

Education


• Graduate of an accredited nursing program recognized by the MN Board of Nursing.

• Bachelor's degree in nursing is required; a Master's degree is preferred. Relevant experience may substitute for educational qualifications.

Experience


• Minimum of 3 years of experience in Operating Room nursing and at least 2 years in a clinical leadership role. A proven track record of increasing responsibilities is essential. A combination of education and demonstrated leadership experience may be considered.

• Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Licensure/Certification


• Current RN licensure in the State of Minnesota or CRNA certification.

• Current BLS Certification.
