Special Education Assistant

The Paraprofessional-Special Education position is responsible for providing a well-organized and smoothly functioning learning environment for special education students in Pre-K through K12. The successful candidate will assist teachers in implementing instructional programs and available resource materials, and may be assigned to work in classrooms, offices, media centers, or with students individually or in groups.
Key Responsibilities- Administer achievement and diagnostics tests as directed by the teacher to support the instructional process.
- Assist students with lesson assignments and training for daily tasks, such as listening to students read, providing writing assistance, and helping with computer learning programs.
- Implement independent study, enrichment work, and daily physical cleanliness for students, including toileting, dressing, and self-feeding.
- Maintain classroom equipment, work area supplies, and learning aids to ensure their availability and provide a safe learning environment.
- Monitor students in various settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, and field trips, to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Report observations and incidents related to specific students to communicate information to instructional and/or administrative personnel.
- Respond to emergency situations, such as injured students or fights, to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Support classroom teachers by assisting with storytelling, reading, drill work, and special one-on-one work.
The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, be at least 21 years old, and possess a paraprofessional license or have passed the paraprofessional assessment. The successful candidate will also be able to maintain confidentiality, set priorities, and work as part of a team.
Physical RequirementsThe position requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. The job involves 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing.
Continuing Education/TrainingThe successful candidate will be required to maintain all licenses and certifications.
