The RN operates within the professional nursing framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model.

The RN's professional role is characterized by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and a commitment to achieving quality outcomes.

Our nursing practice is guided by the principle of 'Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability.' We prioritize Nursing Professional Governance and utilize evidence-based practices to ensure that patient and family needs remain at the forefront of our care.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Standards of Practice: The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, which delineate a competent level of nursing care through the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Assessment:
The RN gathers relevant data and information concerning the healthcare consumer's health or situation.
Diagnosis:
The RN analyzes assessment data to identify actual and potential diagnoses or issues.

Outcomes Identification:
The RN determines expected outcomes tailored to the healthcare consumer's needs.

Planning:
The RN formulates and adjusts a care plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to achieve expected outcomes.

Implementation:
The RN executes the established care plan.

Coordination of Care:
The RN orchestrates care delivery and transitions in care.

Health Teaching and Promotion:
The RN employs strategies to advocate for health and ensure a safe environment.

Evaluation:
The RN assesses progress toward achieving outcomes.

  • Standards of Professional Performance: The ANA Standards of Professional Performance outline a competent level of behavior in the professional role, encompassing ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is expected to engage in professional activities appropriate to their education and position, holding themselves accountable to their actions, healthcare consumers, peers, and society.

Qualifications:

Education:
Graduation from an accredited nursing program is required; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. All newly hired RNs must possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain it within one month of employment.

Experience:
The Registered Nurse role serves as the foundational job description for all RNs, with encouragement to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Licensure:
Must be a licensed and currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification is highly encouraged.

Special Skills:
The Registered Nurse role is foundational for all RNs, with encouragement to pursue advancement through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Physical Demands:
This position requires prolonged standing, walking, and the use of sight, hearing, and touch. Exposure to infectious diseases is possible, along with physical, mental, and emotional challenges, including end-of-life conditions. The role involves moderate stress and potential injury risks from patient care, requiring the ability to assist with lifting patients weighing between five (5) and three hundred (300) pounds.
