Position Overview

The Railroad Track Repair Technician role involves the safe and efficient inspection, maintenance, and repair of railroad track systems to ensure reliable service for our clients. This position requires physical labor and the development of various skills and competencies during a designated training period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections, unload, load, distribute, and install cross ties, switch ties, and other track materials, including ballast.
  • Manage the inspection, unloading, distribution, and installation of rail, including grinding and transposing as necessary.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of turnouts, ensuring they meet safety standards.
  • Perform inspections and maintenance on track, including gauging, lining, and shifting as required.
  • Ensure the safety and maintenance of road crossings through regular inspections and repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain bridges, including painting and renewing as needed.
  • Manage the upkeep of culverts and tunnels through regular inspections and repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain station facilities, ensuring they are safe and functional.
  • Conduct inspections and maintenance on scales used in operations.
  • Manage the maintenance of right-of-way, including sand and snow fences.
  • Inspect, maintain, and clean signage to ensure visibility and compliance.
  • Handle vegetation management, including cutting and disposal.
  • Clear debris from switches and maintain track infrastructure.
  • Remove snow and other obstructions from the track area.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting as required.
  • Read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and regulatory documents.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with team members.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of track authority.
  • Meet performance metrics and deadlines consistently.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and comply with company policies and industry regulations.
  • Respond promptly to accidents, incidents, or emergencies.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments and schematics accurately.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, or 3 to 6 months of relevant experience; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver's license with no restrictions is required.
  • CDL is required or must be obtained.
  • Must successfully complete various safety and operational training and certification programs.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to apply common sense and understanding to follow instructions.
  • Legible writing skills are necessary.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility in work schedule is essential.
  • Ability to identify and address problems effectively.
  • Knowledge of Roadway Protection Rules is beneficial.
  • Broad understanding of railroad operations is advantageous.
