Job Summary

This position serves as the Supervisory Ecologist for the Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network base in Rapid City, South Dakota. The purpose of this position is to design, develop, coordinate, and administer a vegetation ecology program for use by the National Park Service and other scientists.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and work with teams in the implementation and development of vegetation monitoring protocols.
  • Supervise and hire permanent and seasonal vegetation program staff.
  • Conduct statistical analysis, interpret and synthesize results for written and oral presentations to park and scientific communities.
  • Work closely with Invasive Plant Monitoring Team (IPMT) Liaison, fire ecologist, park resource managers, scientists, geographic information system (GIS) specialists, and cooperating personnel to evaluate data, assure that relevant and useful data are acquired and integrated into decision support tools used to help parks make informed treatment choices.
  • Project management including project coordination, writing and overseeing contracts and agreements, developing work plans, schedules, and cost estimates, and tracking budgets.

Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked.

The Basic Individual Occupational Requirement for Ecology Series, 0408, requires a degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

  • At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service.
  • Experience with participating in the planning and execution of ecological or biological studies with a limited number of variables, or performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological monitoring data.

Volunteer experience is also eligible for consideration.
