Job Summary

The Infection Preventionist is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, coordinating, and directing the infection control program and its activities in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain knowledge of current regulations and standards of practice relevant to infection prevention and control.
  • Plan, organize, implement, evaluate, coordinate, and direct the center's infection control program.
  • Coordinate and monitor compliance with current CMS, CDC, OSHA, and local regulations, guidelines, and standards of practice concerning infection control and facilitate related training and education programs.
  • Coordinate and maintain team member and resident health programs, including coordination of immunization and vaccination program.
  • Facilitate regular review of the infection control program and interpret infection control policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Lead the Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee. Report on infection control trends and make recommendations to the Center Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement committee.
  • Review and analyze infectious disease reports and diagnostics. Confirm completion of all appropriate follow-up, intervention, documentation, and reporting associated with infections occurring among residents and team members.
  • Track and trend infection occurrences and rates. Prepare summaries of infection data, with written and oral reports and recommendations to the Director of Nursing, Administrator, and regional leadership.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the center's outbreak and infection trend response and serve as a primary point of contact with local and state public health offices.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement process improvement to address infection control work practices and infection trends.
  • Assist departments managers in evaluating and classifying job-related functions and tasks involving potential exposure to infectious disease and blood/body fluids and monitor infection control practices among team members for adherence to standard operating procedures to reduce exposure risk.
  • Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with policies and procedures governing accidents and incidents.
  • Monitor compliance with guidelines for the decontamination and sterilization activities, disposal of contaminated or infective materials performed in the center.
  • Solicit feedback and staff engagement to identify and correct areas of concern and to develop process improvement for the safe delivery of care and services.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain orientation and ongoing education program for team members relative to infection control and team member health program.
  • Participate in surveys and inspections made by authorized government agencies as requested.
  • Complete specialized education in infection prevention and control. Attend and participate in continuing educational programs designed to maintain knowledge and expertise relative to infection control, professional standards of practice, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice.
  • Minimum of one year of nursing experience in acute or long-term care.
  • One year in a supervisory or management position with experience with staff development, training, and scheduling preferred.
