Custodial Technician I

Job Summary:

This is a part-time, moderately heavy manual work position that involves routine housekeeping and domestic tasks of various buildings. The primary responsibilities include the use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and otherwise caring for buildings and equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Foreman.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead by example and demonstrate an understanding and reflection of the City's mission, vision, and values.
  • Champion a high-performance work culture that encourages and embraces new ideas, develops individuals, and welcomes and encourages diverse perspectives.
  • Effectively manage assignments and priorities to ensure the fulfillment of projects, tasks, and responsibilities.
  • Follow suggested procedures to assure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety, and risk avoidance.
  • Perform routine custodial tasks, including scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and polishing floors, as well as vacuuming, shampooing, and spot-cleaning carpets.
  • Change trash and refuse containers, take trash to specified locations for disposal, and perform minor repair work.
  • Assist in loading and unloading equipment, and assist in rigging of stage equipment and props.
  • Support honest and transparent decision-making, and collaborate with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Entry-level position with demonstrated proficiency and increasing knowledge of job responsibilities and requirements during the 6-month probation period
  • 6 months related experience preferred
  • Valid Driver's License may be required for specific custodian assignment
  • Knowledge of the materials, chemicals, methods, and equipment typically used in janitorial work
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to understand and adhere to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and labels used for chemicals
  • Ability to learn the duties of a custodian
  • Ability to understand and follow simple instructions
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to cleaning equipment
  • Ability to perform heavy manual routine custodial tasks
  • Ability to work on ladders and off the ground

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • 80% inside a climate-controlled building; 20% outside which may include driving
  • The essential functions of the job require sitting approximately thirty (30) minutes per day, standing or walking approximately 7.5 hours per day
  • The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing (stairs and ladder), crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, and occasional lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Technology and Machines:

  • Ability to operate telephones, smart phones, tablets, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software
  • Ability to operate the following machines: buffers, automatic scrubbers, carpet cleaner, vacuums, and heavy-duty cleaning machines
