Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Works Director to lead our team in maintaining and improving the City's infrastructure and facilities. The successful candidate will have a strong background in engineering and management, with the ability to oversee multiple departments and projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise the activities of staff in various departments, including Public Works, Shop, Streets, Storm Sewer, Parks, Pool, Civil Defense, Water, Electric, and Sewer.
  • Manage municipal infrastructure, facilities, and equipment, ensuring proper maintenance and replacement.
  • Develop short-term and long-term planning recommendations for the City's infrastructure and facilities.
  • Coordinate efforts with City Superintendents to direct and supervise activities in various departments.
  • Manage contract projects, including preparing cost estimates, reviewing project specifications and plans, soliciting bids, and executing contract documents.
  • Review subdivision and site construction plans for proposed construction and improvement projects.
  • Manage the issuance of building permits, adherence to building codes, and enforcement of compliance with City ordinances.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Communicate utility-related information with the Finance Office to ensure proper collection of fees and accurate billing.
  • Represent the City as the technical representative for Federal and State government issues.
  • Draft ordinances and resolutions in conjunction with the Finance Officer and City Attorney.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide input on the performance of other public works staff and support staff.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably with a Certified Civil Engineer designation.
  • Strong background in engineering and management, with experience in overseeing multiple departments and projects.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, City officials, and external partners.
  • Knowledge of principles and theories of engineering, building codes, municipal ordinances, State statutes, and Federal regulations.
