Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced veterinarian to serve as the Deputy Director of Animal Health. The successful candidate will assist the Director of Animal Health in overseeing state/federal cooperative animal health programs and disease control and eradication programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Director of Animal Health in expediting all rules and orders of the South Dakota Animal Industry Board
  • Enforce compliance with state and federal codes dealing with contagious diseases and certification programs
  • Conduct disease investigations, testing, and surveillance
  • Oversee livestock neglect and carcass disposal complaint investigations
  • Provide veterinarian and producer outreach and education
  • Assist with state/federal cooperative animal health programs and disease eradication programs
  • Assist with the coordination or administration of programs such as Animal Traceability, TB Surveillance, National Poultry Improvement Plan, the US Swine Health Improvement Plan Program, and South Dakota Voluntary Johne's Disease Program
  • Assist with interstate and intrastate animal movement requirements and compliance
  • Serve as the direct contact for CoreOne animal health database
Requirements
  • Valid driver's license for statewide travel
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in South Dakota
  • Category II accreditation with USDA APHIS or ability to become licensed and accredited within 30 days
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of animal diseases, their causes and control
  • Knowledge of animal disease vectors and their control
  • Skills in epidemiology and population medicine
  • Principles of effective human relations and dealing with the public
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
