Position Overview:

The Bilingual Social Studies Educator is responsible for enhancing student achievement in both academic and social skills by implementing the curriculum approved by the district. This role involves documenting educational progress and activities, addressing the unique educational needs of students, and fostering a safe and effective learning atmosphere. Additionally, the educator provides constructive feedback to students, parents, and school administration regarding academic progress and expectations.

The Bilingual Program is designed to cultivate advanced proficiency in both Spanish and English. This model integrates instruction, allowing students to receive half of their educational experience in Spanish and the other half in English. The program promotes an appreciation for diverse cultures while deepening students' understanding of their native language and the language they are learning.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Principal.

Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: A valid license from the Virginia Department of Education is required or eligibility to obtain one.

Experience: Relevant experience in the field with increasing levels of responsibility is necessary.

  • Key Competencies:
    • Proficiency in academic language in both English and Spanish.
    • Familiarity with current standards, curriculum, and instructional practices in language arts and content areas.
    • Dedication to the objectives of bilingual education; prior experience in a bilingual program is advantageous.
    • Understanding of methods and strategies for teaching academic content to second language learners is preferred.
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of students, including those who are gifted, have disabilities, are English language learners, and come from various cultural and social backgrounds.
    • A positive belief that all students can achieve academic success.
    • Knowledge of cultural norms, values, and beliefs in relation to teaching and learning.
    • Capability to incorporate technology into educational practices.
    • Staying informed on research-based strategies for working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Delivers Spanish language instruction in social studies and other academic subjects.
  • Collaborates with English-speaking dual language partner educators and colleagues to plan and coordinate lessons.
  • Designs differentiated instruction that meets various language proficiency levels and individual learning needs.
  • Modifies instructional materials for Spanish language learners.
  • Administers assessments to evaluate student competency levels and develop personalized learning plans.
  • Communicates with parents and guardians about student progress, expectations, and methods for reinforcing classroom objectives at home.
  • Evaluates student progress towards established goals and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Works with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to enhance student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
  • Guides students in improving their performance, health, problem-solving skills, and addressing personal issues.
  • Demonstrates effective methods for classroom and subject-specific assignments to meet individual student needs.
  • Supervises assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional aides, volunteers, and student workers to ensure an effective classroom environment.
  • Instructs students to enhance their academic, social, and daily living skills through a structured curriculum.
  • Manages student behavior to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment.
  • Monitors students in various educational settings to ensure safety and positive learning experiences.
  • Participates in meetings to share and gather information necessary for fulfilling job responsibilities.
  • Prepares documentation of student progress, including grades and attendance, to meet required standards.
  • Reports incidents to maintain student safety and adhere to educational policies.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the educational unit.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance:

  • Adherence to safety and health protocols is mandatory.
