Job Overview

Position Summary: Reporting directly to the Vice President, this role entails the management of the engineering team and oversight of the fleet operated by Allen Marine Inc. The Marine Engineering Supervisor is accountable for all aspects of maintenance, repairs, and the operational integrity of vessel machinery and equipment. The ideal candidate will establish and enforce a comprehensive preventive maintenance program while leading engineers to ensure consistent upkeep and repairs across the fleet throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds as part of job duties.
  • Comfortable working in proximity to diesel engines and confined spaces.
  • Oversee all engineering staff, both in port and at sea.
  • Provide mentorship and training to engineering personnel on vessels.
  • Authorize and create requisitions for necessary spare parts, supplies, and services from vendors.
  • Assess and determine the methods, duration, and costs associated with required repairs.
  • Develop specifications, schedules, and manage shipyard operations.
  • Act as the project manager for engineering initiatives.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and selection of engineering staff for vessels.
  • Design and implement a proactive maintenance strategy.
  • Self-driven and capable of working independently.
  • Conduct routine inspections of vessels to identify potential issues and formulate corrective plans.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Be available for on-call duties outside of regular hours.
  • Maintain a drug-free workplace in compliance with Coast Guard regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least three years of experience as a Port Engineer with a proven track record in managing shipyard projects.
  • Experience working as a Marine Engineer aboard vessels.
  • A total of 10 years of relevant experience, including education or military background in shipyard operations.
  • Strong project management capabilities and technical expertise.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of vessel construction and maintenance practices.
  • Familiarity with all facets of marine engineering, including electrical systems.
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical schematics.
  • Proficient in establishing and maintaining an effective preventive maintenance system.
  • Experience in budget management and cost reduction strategies, along with knowledge of parts and equipment procurement.
  • Commitment to safety in a dynamic work environment.
  • Develop and maintain a maintenance inventory (e.g., lubricants, filters, tools).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Ensure dock and workshop areas are clean, safe, and free from hazards.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Occasional travel to various ports may be required.
  • May be called upon to fill in for the Chief Engineer when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marine engineering or naval architecture, or equivalent experience.
  • Three years of experience in a similar role with increasing responsibilities.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to foster strong working relationships.
  • Proficient report writing capabilities.
  • Ability to work autonomously and engage in hands-on tasks as required.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and maritime law.
  • Competent in using computers and software applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite.
