Position Overview:
The primary responsibility of this role is to accurately assign ICD-10 CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for both inpatient and outpatient services by meticulously reviewing medical records documentation provided by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
The following duties are representative of the work performed by individuals in this position and are not exhaustive:

  • Analyze documentation and assign diagnosis and procedure codes for ancillary and physician services utilizing standardized coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Examine records for precision in the application and assignment of modifiers for Evaluation and Management services along with any applicable procedure modifiers.
  • Address inquiries from Patient Business Services regarding the correction of claim information related to coding, service dates, provider details, etc.
  • Draft appeal letters for submission to insurance companies for reconsideration of denied claims.
  • Provide expert advice and support to administrators, faculty, and staff regarding coding practices and documentation in accordance with third-party payer regulations.
  • Assist fellow coding staff in the unit to ensure coverage as needed and participate in training sessions for new coders when requested.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.

A combination of 18 months of experience in the following areas is preferred:

  • Work experience in a healthcare environment (e.g., hospital, physician's office, nursing home, billing agency) utilizing ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, as well as the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
  • College coursework related to healthcare operations covering topics such as Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, ICD-10 Coding, and CPT Coding, or similar subjects. 6 semester hours equals 6 months, 12 semester hours equals 12 months, and 18 semester hours equals 18 months.
