Environmental Education Program Leader

Reports To: Skyland Ranch Experience Manager
General Overview:
Under the guidance of the Skyland Ranch Experience Manager, the Program Instructor will conduct educational sessions as part of the outdoor learning initiatives. This role entails direct teaching and oversight of participants, ensuring a secure and enriching outdoor environment. The instructor will also contribute to the promotion, teaching, and execution of outdoor education and grant-supported programs both on-site and off. The position includes direct supervision of participants, with shared housing options available for camp staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advocate for Outdoor Education and grant-supported initiatives through various communication methods as directed by the Programming Director.
- Deliver engaging lessons to participants in diverse environments, including nature trails and outdoor settings.
- Assist in the conceptualization and execution of program ideas, plan activities for sessions, and assess program effectiveness.
- Oversee all operational aspects of the camp, including kitchen responsibilities, cabin maintenance, cleaning tasks, inventory management, and other duties essential for successful grant-funded programs.
- Be aware of the diverse needs of participants, including special requirements (e.g., dietary restrictions, medications, etc.), and address these needs effectively.
- Maintain a safe and hygienic camp atmosphere for both participants and staff.
- Supervise and support participants in all outdoor education or grant-funded activities (e.g., wake-up routines, meals, programming, rest periods).
- Promptly report any incidents or accidents.
- Complete and submit all necessary reports and evaluations in a timely manner.
- Review the current outdoor education season and provide recommendations for future sessions.
- Foster a culture of respect and professionalism among colleagues, volunteers, and all individuals encountered in the role.
- Uphold strict confidentiality and professionalism when managing sensitive information.
- Comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
- Adhere to the standards set by the American Camp Association and relevant local and state agencies.

Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma required.
- Post-secondary education in environmental education is advantageous.
Experience:
- Background knowledge in environmental education programming is preferred.
- Experience in teaching age-appropriate lessons to children is beneficial.
Skills:
- Ability to keep supervisors informed about activities and any issues that arise.
- Ability to work within established protocols and recognize the responsibilities of the position.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and meet the physical demands of camp life.
- Commitment to ensuring the health and safety of participants and staff.
- Understanding and adherence to all safety protocols and cleaning schedules for council and camp facilities.
- Exhibit a demeanor conducive to effective instruction and appropriate behavior correction.
- Ability to work with individuals of all ages, races, abilities, religions, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Possess a positive attitude, flexibility, responsibility, patience, and enthusiasm.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid California driver's license and an insured vehicle in good working condition.
- Successful completion of a criminal history background check is required.
- Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification and Serve Safe certification.
