Position Overview

General Overview:

Under the guidance of the Skyland Ranch Experience Manager, the Program Instructor will conduct educational sessions as part of the outdoor learning initiatives. This role involves direct teaching and oversight of participants, ensuring a secure and enriching outdoor environment. The instructor will also contribute to the promotion, instruction, and execution of outdoor education and grant-supported programs both on-site and off. Responsibilities include the direct supervision of participants, with shared housing available for camp staff.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Promote outdoor education and grant-supported initiatives through various means such as photography, communications, and meetings as directed by the Programming Director.
  2. Deliver engaging lessons to participants in diverse settings, including nature trails and outdoor environments.
  3. Assist in the creation and execution of program concepts, plan activities for sessions, and assess the effectiveness of the program.
  4. Oversee all operational aspects of the camp, including kitchen responsibilities, cabin maintenance, cleaning tasks, inventory management, and other essential duties for successful grant-supported programs.
  5. Be attentive to the needs of participants, including those with special requirements (e.g., dietary restrictions, medication, etc.), ensuring their needs are met within assigned groups.
  6. Maintain a safe and hygienic camp environment for both participants and staff.
  7. Supervise and support participants in all outdoor education or grant-supported activities (e.g., wake-up routines, meals, programming, rest periods).
  8. Promptly report any incidents or accidents.
  9. Complete and submit all required reports and evaluations in a timely manner.
  10. Review the current outdoor education season and provide recommendations for future sessions.
  11. Foster a culture of professionalism and respect among coworkers, volunteers, and all individuals encountered in the role.
  12. Uphold strict confidentiality and professionalism when managing sensitive information.
  13. Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.
  14. Comply with the standards set by the American Camp Association and relevant local and state agencies.

Qualifications and Skills:

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma
  • Post-secondary education in environmental education is advantageous.

Minimum Experience:

  • Background knowledge in environmental education programming is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching age-appropriate lessons to children is beneficial.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to keep supervisors informed of activities and issues within the work area.
  • Capability to operate within established protocols while recognizing the responsibilities of the position.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and meet the demands of camp life.
  • Commitment to ensuring the health and safety of participants and staff.
  • Understanding and adherence to all safety protocols and cleaning schedules for council and camp facilities.
  • Exhibit a demeanor conducive to effective instruction and appropriate correction of safety-related behaviors.
  • Ability to engage with individuals of all ages, races, disabilities, religions, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Possess a positive attitude and demonstrate flexibility, responsibility, patience, and enthusiasm.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid California driver's license and an insured vehicle in good condition.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check is required.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification and Serve Safe certification.
