POSITION TITLE: Peer Support Specialist
REPORTS TO: Operations Director
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Regular, full-time
CLASSIFICATION: Hourly
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Peer Support Specialist plays a crucial role in exemplifying wellness and providing mentorship to clients receiving services. This position emphasizes the belief in recovery and happiness for all individuals. The specialist will advocate within the recovery community and engage in activities that promote sharing personal recovery narratives. Responsibilities include working collaboratively with clients, families, and community resources to eliminate obstacles, address triggers for relapse, and mend relationships.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
1. Educate families about available support resources within the community.
2. Guide families in recognizing warning signs and appropriate responses to support their loved ones.
3. Ensure that the voices of recovering individuals are acknowledged and valued.
4. Assist clients in articulating their treatment needs to service providers.
5. Provide crisis intervention when necessary.
6. Help clients access resources that promote independence, such as transportation and vocational services.
7. Identify and strategize around barriers to recovery.
8. Advocate for mental health awareness and reduce stigma within the community.
9. Maintain collaborative relationships with partner organizations.
10. Pursue ongoing training to enhance service delivery.
11. Support clients in building natural community connections.
12. Collaborate with peers and staff to identify and utilize community resources effectively.
13. Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Certification as a Peer Support Specialist or in progress towards relevant certifications.
3. Demonstrated commitment to a healthy lifestyle and ability to share personal recovery experiences.
4. Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing and Trauma-Informed Care principles.
5. Minimum of two years' experience in substance use support roles.
6. Strong knowledge of community resources and referral processes.
7. If in recovery, must have a minimum of one year in remission and actively engaged in a recovery program.
8. Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
9. Successful completion of background checks and necessary certifications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Associate's Degree in relevant fields such as Social Work or Counseling.
2. Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
3. Active National Provider Identifier (NPI) and Qualified Addictions Professional (QAP) status.
4. Experience as a Peer Support Trainer.
5. Knowledge of state regulations regarding behavioral health.
