Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Shelter Monitor to join our team at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County. As a key member of our shelter staff, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our guests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for guests, enforcing shelter rules and guidelines while promoting a culture of respect and empathy.
  • Monitor and maintain the safety of guests, utilizing de-escalation tactics and harm reduction intervention when necessary.
  • Prepare for each shift by meeting with the shift supervisor to discuss any concerns or issues.
  • Document all pertinent incidents and make referrals or supportive services to the case manager as needed.
  • Take on a supportive role, listening to and guiding guests, while maintaining a professional and friendly attitude.
  • Assist with medical emergencies, including calling 911 and clearing space for paramedics.
  • Maintain familiarity with emergency contact information, property maps, and emergency exits.
  • Assist guests with securing personal belongings in the shelter storage facility.
  • Report any facility issues, such as fire hazards or unsecure areas, to the SVdP team.
  • Facilitate the daily database check-in process and maintain accurate guest records.
  • Perform daily tasks, including sorting, washing, and folding shelter linen, and supporting the Chef and Shelter Cook in preparing and serving dinner.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working with unhoused adults in a supportive capacity.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people, including those with substance abuse issues, disabilities, and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong work ethics and willingness to work hard to accomplish difficult tasks.
  • Ability to lift items up to 10 pounds and carry items up to 30 pounds for distances up to 25 feet.
  • Complies with written and verbal instruction, and performs tasks assigned by the supervisor on duty.
  • Positive attitude, ability to be a positive influence on a team, and demonstrate proactivity, flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm.
  • Professionalism, maturity, good decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Dependable and trustworthy.
Additional Responsibilities on Night Shift
  • Stay alert throughout the entire shift to ensure safety and security of shelter program staff and all guests.
  • Facilitate the evening schedule, including turning off lights and making announcements about wake-up time and morning showers.
  • Ensure all participants are situated in cots during quiet hours.
  • Document all guests entering the shelter for the night and complete an HMIS assessment for any new guest staying in the shelter for the first time.
  • Complete the full nightly checklist on each shift.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrated capacity to make safety-driven, effective decisions in crisis situations.
  • Ability to respond in a clear, calm manner to crises, including incidents of confrontation, violence, or medical crises.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and other software.
  • Team player with the ability to work collaboratively with other staff members, program participants, and volunteers.
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
