Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the community, especially for those clients and animals who may not have another accessible option for care. This position is responsible for assisting veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, and the veterinary clinic manager at the Full-Service Veterinary Clinic and the Spay/Neuter Clinics.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with processing clients, preparing client records, and performing diagnostic tests under the direct supervision of the staff veterinarian, RVT, or veterinary supervisor.
  • Take and process x-rays, collect diagnostic samples, and check in clients.
  • Assist with preparing prescriptions, sharing in customer service, and maintaining a clean and disinfected clinic.
  • Restrain animals as needed, assist with medical procedures, and provide client education and support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the veterinarian or veterinary clinic manager.

Requirements
  • Minimum of one year working in a veterinary clinic, with high volume veterinary clinic experience preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred, with proven organizational skills and effective communication.
  • Competent animal handler, with ability to obtain and retain a veterinary assistant controlled substance permit within 90 days of hire.
  • Become Fear Free Certified within 90 days of hire, with reliable transportation and a valid California driver's license.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in an animal shelter and veterinary clinic environment with exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions.
  • Animal contacts and related injuries, including bites and scratches, may occur.
  • Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats on a daily basis, with frequent exposure to and/or handling of industrial cleaning supplies and controlled substances.
